Brackley Street was named after Viscount Brackley - the title given to the eldest sons of the Earl of Bridgewater who owned a townhouse on Bridgewater Square.

Brackley Street was first built in the 17th century, first mentioned in 1677. The street lay slightly further to the north with its eastern end being called Letton Street.

It was built on part of the site of Bridgwater House, while the original Brackley Street further north occupied part of the site known afterwards as Bridgwater Gardens.

It was completely rebuilt between 1892 and 1896.
