The ’Grid’ housing development was an outstanding success from the start mainly because it coincided with the evolution of a new type of city-dweller. The much improved education system of the later Victorian era produced families with a clerk, civil servant or shopkeeper at the head, people whose taste was being moulded by popular novels and monthly magazines.

Developers enticed them out to the suburbs with houses that were spacious and attractively designed.
