At just over 6 hectares in area, it’s not the largest of London’s parks (though is the largest park in Bethnal Green) but is one of the most historic – its name derives from this area having once been the centre of the silk weaving trade.
Land for the park was envisaged in the 1943 Abercrombie Plan. The first section was laid out in 1963 with more land acquired by compulsory purchase order in 1965. Fourteen local streets were wholly or partly lost to the park, with demolitions beginning in the late 1950s.
The streets that formed Weavers Fields were originally part of the Willett Estate.
The layout of certain paths in the park still follow some of the original paths of the original streets.
