Acanthus Road, SW11

The acanthus leaf was one of the most important decorative features of the 19th century.

The acanthus leaf is a decorative motif that has been used in architecture and art for thousands of years, dating back to ancient Greece and Rome. The acanthus leaf was used to decorate the capitals of Corinthian columns and was later adopted by the Romans for their own architectural designs. It was widely used in European architecture throughout the medieval period and into the Renaissance.

The local District Surveyor and architect Edward l’Anson developed this estate. A late 1860s proposal extended Acanthus Road north towards the later Birley Street.

Acanthus Road was originally proposed as Claremont Road.
