Hanger Lane is a major road, road junction and Underground station in Ealing which has become part of the North Circular Road.
Hanger Lane runs north from the Uxbridge Road at Ealing Common to the Hanger Lane gyratory (Western Avenue). North of the gyratory, Hanger Lane continues along to Vicar’s Bridge and Alperton.
The road takes its name from Hanger Hill. The name comes from the Old English word
hangra, meaning ’wooded slope’.
The Great Western Railway opened Twyford Abbey Halt just east of the current site of Hanger Lane station on 1 May 1904 as part of an extension towards High Wycombe. It was closed in 1911 and replaced by Brentham station to the west of the present location. Brentham and most main-line stations between North Acton and West Ruislip were finally closed in 1947 when the Central line was extended from North Acton on electrified tracks. The Central line station opened on 30 June 1947 as ’Hanger Lane’.
Hanger Lane station is within walking distance of Park Royal station on the Piccadilly line.
