The original Crooked Billet alehouse was located in the marshes at Creekmouth.

It was first mentioned in 1719 and, along with the Gunpowder warehouses, was the only building in this isolated part of Barking before the arrival of the Lawes factory in the 1850s.

During the growth of the Barking fishing industry, it was one of the best situated of all the Barking alehouses, being beside the departure and arrival points of the fishing fleet. The old Crooked Billet with its weather boarded walls was replaced by the present building in 1925.

The pub was notably run by the Stubbs family for around 60 years.

The pub was eventually taken over and became the River Restaurant.
