River Road is the oldest road in Barking Riverside.
The road came into being by ’stealth’ without a formal beginning.
It connected Creekmouth village with the Ripple Level. Creekmouth is a disappeared communtiy. It was established in 1856 and lasted until 1958. The villagers were rehoused after the village was flooded in the North Sea flood of 1953.
A large colourful mural adorns a wall on River Road - a tribute to the victims of the 1878 SS Princess Alice sinking. More than 650 people were killed nearby when the passenger paddle steamer collided with the collier Bywell Castle.
