Delivering ice on Court Lane, Dulwich

Court Lane was first mentioned in 1599 as 'the highway leading from the Manor House'.

As 'Dulwich Court Lane' by 1619, it lead from the 129 acres Dulwich Court Farm (later Constable's Farm), which lay on either side of it, the southern fields later forming the nucleus of Dulwich Park.

It became Court Lane around 1834. D. H. Allport, wrote in 1953: 'Many residents in Dulwich will remember the elm-lined hedgerows which bordered the old lane, the deep ruts and the mud of Stygian blackness which formed its surface in winter time.'
