Between 1874 and 1896 the area south of Nightingale Lane morphed from a mushrooming street plan developing on the existing field patterns into the system of roads and buildings which exists today. Such unprecedented development in such a short period of time reflects Balham's rapidly growing status as a fashionable high-class suburb, close to the rapidly expanding rail network and within easy reach of the city
