White Hind Alley, Bankside (1896)

This area of Southwark has moved from extreme poverty to extreme desirability during the past 100 or so years.

Proximity to the Thames once meant living amongst industry and its toxic outflows, cramped old dark housing near to a highly polluted and pungent river. A couple of the boys depicted here aren't wearing shoes.

With the improvement in water quality, Thames views and riverside living are at a premium now - some of the most expensive property in the capital now line the streets near to the former site of White Hind Alley.
