The main Uxbridge Road was the A40 until the Western Avenue was designated with this number. This arrangement didn’t survive the First World War with the remaining plots being filled in along with new surrounding roads. TUM image id: 1466547824 Licence:	“The Ginny” (1950s) The Acton Town to South Acton shuttle was a District Line service connecting the two stations via a now closed spur. It was also known as “the kettle run” since the crew could set off from Acton Town, travel the short distance to South Acton and back and the tea making started at Acton Town would be finished upon their return. It was the first example of One Person Operation on the Underground - the little trains had a driver but no guard. The justification was that there was only one car on the train. Ten years later the line to Ealing was opened and in 1883 trains started to run through to Hounslow. Initially, the station only had two platforms with one up and one down line running between them; passengers crossed from one platform to the other using the footbridge, which can be seen in the photograph. In 1911 the station was reconstructed, with two island platforms with sets of tracks running on either side, thus allowing for an increase in the number of trains.
