Albion Street’s name can be traced back to its proximity to Albion Dock, which was opened in 1860.

Albion Street is depicted and named on the early 19th-century Horwood Plan, showcasing its presence and significance in the area. It is now is a vibrant and diverse street offering shops, a supermarket, restaurants, a florist, an Italian cafe and an art gallery. It is important for both the Finnish and Norwegian communities.

Rotherhithe Civic Centre and Library, constructed in 1975, replaced a previously bombed library. The building was designed by Yorker Rosenberg & Mardall, who also designed the Finnish Seamen’s Church located opposite. The feature of unadorned red brick, matches the architectural style of the Finnish Seamen’s Church.

The Finnish Seamen’s Church was built in 1958 and serves as a successor to the original Finnish Mission in London established in 1887. Notably, the church includes a basement sauna designed by June Park, the wife of one of the architects. It plays a significant role in London’s Finnish community.

St Olaf’s Norwegian Church, designed by John L. Seaton Dahl and built in 1925-1927, was intended for Norwegian seamen. The church is characterised by its red brick construction and spire topped with a Viking ship featuring a golden sail. Inside, visitors can find a model of a Norwegian frigate that was damaged by a drifting barrage balloon during the Second World War. The stained glass panels within the church originate from the second Norwegian church in London, the Ebenezer church of 1871, which was also located in Rotherhithe.

Visitors to Albion Street can also explore the Rotherhithe Conservation area, which is located on the other side of the Rotherhithe tunnel.

The Swan Road Mosaic is 3.35 metres by 9.60 metres and was made from vitreous glass by the artist David John in 1992. The mural is one of a number of environmental art projects in which the artist was involved. The work consists of around 350,000 pieces of Italian vitreous glass specially designed for mosaics. The background shows the skyline along Rotherhithe’s riverfront, as seen from Wapping on the opposite shore. The buildings include 19th century dock warehouses, cranes and industrial chimney stacks. The scene is dominated by the clock tower of St Mary’s church. It is from this ancient waterfront that the Mayflower is said to have started its voyage which took the Pilgrim Fathers from Plymouth to New England.

The Fighting Temeraire (1838) This is a renowned oil painting created by the English artist J.M.W. Turner, born on 23 April 1775. The painting was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1839 and is currently housed in the National Gallery in London. The painting depicts the HMS Temeraire, a famous 98-gun ship that played a significant role in the Battle of Trafalgar, being towed by a steam tug along the Thames in 1838. The ship was being taken to Rotherhithe in order to be dismantled and sold as scrap. Turner seems to have painted his famous painting - The Fighting Temeraire - from the balcony at the Angel Inn, situated at 101 Bermondsey Wall East.
