Basingdon Way was named after a prominent 16th century Camberwell family.

As the Dulwich Society notes upon the naming of the street, this was one of a number of names perhaps simply lifted from W.H. Blanch’s 1875 book ’Ye Parish of Camerwell’. At a time of much redevelopment, many new street names were needed.

Credit: Frederick Alfred Finch TUM image id: 1705670753 Licence:	Camberwell Flats by Night (1983) David Hepher (b.1935) is best known for his paintings of buildings, mainly tower blocks, which he refers to as "urban landscapes". ‘Camberwell Flats’ is part of a series of paintings, two of which can be found at the Museum of London and another at the Middlesborough Institute of Modern Art. They reflect Hepher’s sustained focus on residential architecture, and details of ordinary, everyday life, sometimes pushing it to the brink of abstraction. A “Jubilee concert” took place there in March 1914 to mark the 50th anniversary of the opening of the first Peabody estate in Spitalfields. The blocks of flats resemble earlier Peabody estates, except that red brick was used instead of yellow. Block F included a communal bathhouse. For the final phase of building a new architect was selected to design 64 of the cottages. He was Victor Wilkins, who remained as Peabody’s architect until his retirement in 1948. A householder needed an outflow pipe to be installed causing the Mumford Road sign to be moved down and revealing a sign with the older name. As ’Dulwich Court Lane’ by 1619, it lead from the 129 acres Dulwich Court Farm (later Constable’s Farm), which lay on either side of it, the southern fields later forming the nucleus of Dulwich Park. It became Court Lane around 1834. D. H. Allport, wrote in 1953: "Many residents in Dulwich will remember the elm-lined hedgerows which bordered the old lane, the deep ruts and the mud of Stygian blackness which formed its surface in winter time." In about 1773, wheelwright John Shaw and builder William Levens built six brick houses at the eastern end (starting with a wheelwright’s shop), for Robert Boxall, lessee of ’The Greyhound’ Inn. The road was gradually extended westward, to link up with Turney Road in the late 1870s.
