Friern Road, SE22

Friern Road runs from Peckham Rye up to Dulwich Park.

The road was named in 1868 after Friern Manor (the house was on the junction of Friern Road and Underhill Road). In 1864 the land was sold and the road developed with Victorian houses.

A Flying bomb caused extensive damage at the Lordship Lane end in the Second World War. That site now has social housing on it.

A Clarkson Steam Bus, operated by the National Steam Car Company which ran steam buses in London from 1909 to 1919. From Peckham Rye to Shepherd’s Bush, this route was eventually replaced by the No. 12 bus. The old Peckham bus garage was opposite the Tyrrell Arms on Peckham Rye. P.S. As ’Dulwich Court Lane’ by 1619, it lead from the 129 acres Dulwich Court Farm (later Constable’s Farm), which lay on either side of it, the southern fields later forming the nucleus of Dulwich Park. It became Court Lane around 1834. D. H. Allport, wrote in 1953: "Many residents in Dulwich will remember the elm-lined hedgerows which bordered the old lane, the deep ruts and the mud of Stygian blackness which formed its surface in winter time." It consists of small Victorian houses that were infilled a garden of a Rye Lane house in the c 1870s. It is now a car-free cul-de-sac off of Choumert Grove and was built as a row of one-bedroom cottages without back gardens. Each cottage has a small front garden which are generally well-tended. While called a ’square’, it is more of a lane which has a community of residents which opens itself for a summer Open Day once every year. Peckham Rye station began operating in 1865, with an open square in front. It was designed by the noted Victorian architect Charles Henry Driver, who also designed some of London’s great pumping stations. It is unknown whether Driver was also a fan of billiards - opportunities to play on the green baize seem to dominate the station whether by design or accident. The image features a huge group of men. It’s also unknown if they are the station’s many billiards players gathered for a group photo.
