Pert Close, N10

Pert Close was created as part of a slum clearance project.

Middle class family living in Muswell Hill. c1890.

The Freehold estate covered much of what is now Cromwell Road, Syndney Road and Hampden Road. It was laid out about 1863 by the Westminster Freehold Land Society on low, badly drained land close to Strawberry Brook.

By 1867 overcrowding was such that there were about a thousand people living in 130 houses, many of them labourers attracted by employment at Alexandra Palace.

Slum clearance in the area was proposed as long ago as 1933, but Pert Close, a large estate of 3-storey flats, was erected only in 1970.

The yard of Wood Green fire station in Bounds Green Road (1938) A side note that everybody was preparing for war in 1938. If the date of the photo is correct, people were preparing rather early. There do not appear to be any blackout deflectors on the headlamps so presumably before 1939 - certainly before 1941 when Wood Green would have been subsumed into the National Fire Service. After the war, Wood Green became part of the Middlesex Fire Service and then part of the London Fire Brigade under the Greater London Council in 1965 when the borough became part of the London Borough of Haringey. In the background can be seen the railway buildings on the Kings Cross main line to the north, an area of later interest to Nazi bombers during the Blitz.
