The foothills of the Andes Mountains near the southern coast of Peru were captured by the Kompsat-2 satellite. The Andes stretch from Venezuela down South America’s west coast to the top of Argentina. The mountain rage is the result of the Nazca and Antarctic tectonic plates moving under the South American plate—a geological process called subduction. This process is also responsible for the Andes range’s volcanic activity.

From a geostationary orbit 36 000 kilometers above the equator, Russian meteorological satellite Elektro-L takes high-resolution images of our planet every 30 minutes. But only twice a year, during an Equinox, can it capture an image like this one, showing an entire hemisphere bathed in sunlight.

Scientists created this composite image of Vesta’s crater Aelia. The image reveals the flow material on the inside and outside of the crater. Scientists at the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research in Germany re-analysed images of the asteroid taken by Dawn’s framing camera, selecting different colours for the varying wavelengths of light.

Mimas and Pandora remind us of how different they are when they appear together as in this Cassini spacecraft image. Although they are both moons of Saturn, Pandora’s small size means that it lacks sufficient gravity to pull itself into a round shape like its larger sibling, Mimas.
