Laurence Mews, W12

Laurence Mews is the successor name to the former Askew Buildings.

Laurence Mews is a cobbled cul-de-sac off Askew Road containing 24 properties used for residential and commercial purposes. It is located on the site of an original Mews but has been re-developed to a degree that it no longer contains any surviving Mews properties.

At the back of the Mews are the original buildings built in 1880 but at the front are newer developments.

It is unclear when the mews was renamed.

It is named after the White City Exhibition that took place on the site in 1908. The estate was built by the London County Council. 23 blocks were completed by the outbreak of the war, with the rest completed afterwards. Mr L.P. Keene had earlier set up his works in a yard behind the Stores in Bath Road. He claimed it was the best repairing works in London with accommodation for 250 cars. He developed a fourteen-horsepower steam car called the ’Keenelet’, but it did not catch on and the company failed in 1904. In 1906 the firm of H.J. Mulliner, coachbuilders, took over the premises, which by then included workshops and offices in the three-storey Stores building. Mulliners made high-quality coachwork for firms such as Rolls-Royce and Bentley. It merged with Park Ward and moved to Willesden in 1961. Construction work on the Wormholt Estate (1920) The East Acton area lay in a ’railway desert’ until the arrival of the Central Line. While areas to the north and south urbanised, a pocket of countryside survived very close to Shepherds Bush until after the First World War. This continuing bad connection with the rest of the area, before the First World War, allowed White City stadium to be developed as a green field site. It was demolished in 1958 and eventually replaced by a Shell filling station. According to descendant Hilary Tilmouth, the people you can see in the garden are Catherine Murcott, twins Annie and Kitty, along with Willy and Lionel Mutcott. From 1869 the London and South Western Railway ran services between Kensington and Richmond via Shepherds Bush and Hammersmith (The Grove) stations, in a loop joining up with the existing District Line. Intended to link Richmond with the city, this roundabout route lost out to the more direct electrified District Line and was closed to passengers in 1916. This postcard hints at the leisurely tempo of trains using the line.
