The "Three Men In A Boat" era River Thames. This is a map dating from the 1850s when the River Thames upstream of Battersea was the equivalent of the River Thames upstream of Marlow now. (For the sake of accuracy I should point out that JK Jerome’s book post-dates this map by thirty years) The river is fringed by large houses, meadows and market gardens. Only two bridges span the Thames and Battersea Park has recently replaced a waterlogged area.
