The Earl Derby himself was Thomas Stanley, 1st Earl of Derby who fought at the battle of Bosworth. Bosworth Road was the first street built as Kensal New Town started to expand to the east and was the first street (apart from Middle Row) not named after a compass point: East Row, Southern Row, West Row) Once Bosworth Road was named, the pub came came along as an example of a back formation. Drovers bringing their cattle to the London markets would house them in these sheds for the night, whilst they themselves found shelter and refreshment in the neighbouring tavern, which received a nickname alongside its official one. In 1877, an application was made to the Chelsea Vestry "to build a School House and premises. to be known as Middle Row Schools. Kensal Road by Messrs. Hook & Oldrey, builders..." The Artizans’, Labourers’, and General Dwellings Co. built the Queen’s Park Estate from the 1875 onwards on temperance principles. While the Estate was well-provisioned in most amenities, there were no public houses. Instead, the minds of the new residents were to be improved and space was reserved on the corner of Harrow Road and Fourth Avenue for a public library. It was built by the local council.
