The motorisation of London taxis began in the early 20th century. This can be seen here with this motor hansom cab on a standard 1905 Vauxhall chassis, but with the controls changed over so the driver can operate them from the rear and aloft. Harringay Festival on Green Lanes (2009) Whilst it is undeniably an ancient thoroughfare, the age and origin of Green Lanes is somewhat uncertain. It possibly originated as a drovers’ road along which cattle were walked from Hertfordshire to London. But its origins may date back as far as the Roman period. It was at the corner of St Ann’s Road and Seven Sisters Road in N15. It comprised two wooden platforms, accessed by a footbridge and stairs, and a brick building. The service at the station was generally between St Pancras or Kentish Town and Barking or Southend. It was never well used, mainly as it was near South Tottenham and Seven Sisters stations, the latter gave a much faster link to The City. The station was closed on 9 August 1942 as a wartime austerity measure and never reopened. The station building survived as a newsagents until October 2012, when the building was demolished. Upgrading works for the Hornsey Outfall Sewer, Fairfax Road (1903) When Harringay Park was sold off and Harringay House pulled down, the Harringay Ladder streets were laid out in their place. As the houses were built the space over the Hornsey Outfall Sewer became a footpath - Harringay Passage The photo shows work in the early 1900s between Fairfax and Frobisher roads; the houses had to be supported to prevent collapse. The number of coats hanging on the wall shows the job provided work for several men.
