Mr Edward Bowler Watkins was born at Tanyard Farm and lived there for most of his life. He died in 1931 aged 91. The pub was part of the Blendon Hall estate but a fire gutted it in 1890. Rebuilt after the fire, the estate owners sold the premises in 1921. The brewing company Charrington bought the freehold twenty years later. The pub flourished and the owners built a further extension to the premises in 1983. This is now a road which takes much traffic on its way to join the busy A2 and no longer looks the idyllic place in the photograph.
