Hare Street - then Richard Street - was finished in 1821 with a total of 158 houses built. Most houses were two storeys high, occasionally three. The narrowest frontages were put up by shipwrights from Woolwich Dockyard, and then sub-leased. Originally Warwick Street, Lord Warwick Street in Woolwich was demolished and rebuilt in the 1960s. On a previous publishing of this photo, the girl in the middle with her hands in her pockets was identified as Pat Mahoney. It was designed by Sir Maurice Fitzmaurice and built by Walter Scott & Middleton for London County Council. Its creation owed much to the efforts of working-class politician Will Crooks who had worked in the docks and, after chairing the LCC’s Bridges Committee responsible for the tunnel, would later serve as Labour MP for Woolwich.
