’Hammersmith Bridge’ (2019) From Leeds, Diane studied Art at the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, graduating with a BA(Hons) in Visual Art, followed by a Post-Graduate Certificate in Education. On moving to London she worked initially in the animation industry, followed by a career in Graphic Design for television and special effects post-production. Diane has now returned to her first love of printmaking and painting. Layng was born in Macclesfield, Cheshire, the eldest of two daughters of Alfred Edward Freestone Layng and Ada Mary Coates. In 1902 Mabel Layng left to study at the St John's Wood Art School. She then went on to study under Frank Brangwyn at the London School of Art in Kensington between 1906 and 1908. From 1914 until her death in 1937 she lived with her sister Ada in Ealing, earning a living as a professional artist. She was the owner of Whalebones House and the grounds surrounding it. In her will, she asked trustees to conserve the land and enable local groups to use it. As an artist, she had made herself responsible for maintaining the feature that gave Whalebones its name: an archway formed of the jawbones of a blue whale.
