Claremont Road seems to date from after 1860.
Handley Page established an aerodrome in Claremont Road in 1912. It was used by Handley Page Transport from 1919, and later also by Imperial Airways, for passenger flights to Europe.
Surrounding building restricted expansion and the airfield was closed in 1929, whereupon the site was rapidly covered with houses or converted to playing fields.
