Fleet Road refers to the buried River Fleet here.
The Fleet River’s journey through London is now mostly underground. The covering over of the river in this area took place in the 1870s. It was a significant transformation of the cityscape. The clues embedded in street names, such as Fleet Road, often serve as a tangible link to the hidden watercourses beneath the urban surface.
