Gwendwr Road pays homage to the Welsh heritage of the Gunter estate.
The air raids that occurred on the night of 20 February 1944, had a devastating impact on the Gunter Estate in West Kensington. Recognising the significant loss of life, the Gunter Estate took a step in 1948 to honour the memory of the victims.
The Estate generously donated an area of land that had previously served as tennis courts to Fulham Council. The purpose of this donation was to create a memorial. Fulham Council took on the responsibility of developing the donated land into a small park, occupying an area of just under an acre.
In July 1948, the park was officially opened as Gwendwr Garden.
