Northwood Hills is lower in elevation than Northwood despite its name. The land on which Northwood Hills now stands was once the Great Common Wood which covered 860 acres in the 16th century. Robert Cecil, Earl of Salisbury secured its inclosure and sold 568 acres of the wood in 1608 for £4000. The remaining woodland became Copse Wood.
Northwood Hills station opened on 13 November 1933. Much of Northwood Hills was susequently built during the 1930s by the Belton Estates company led by Harry Peachey. Harry Neal was responsible for building the shopping parade in Joel Street.
The Northwood Hills pub, opposite the tube station, is accredited as the place where Sir Elton John first performed professionally.
