A view of Old Road, Martens Grove, Barnehurst in 1934.

This view shows just completed homes on Ayling’s Martens Grove Estate.

The bunting contrasts uncomfortably with the bare gardens and untidy footway.

Ayling’s are in full promotional mode. A show house invites potential purchasers, who must pass under the triumphal arch (partly obscured) that leads onto the estate.

Ayling’s cleared a considerable acreage of ancient woodland on which to build the estate.

The sight of the pair of gas holders was one that the new residents had to get used to.
