Bavent Road commemorates a family who held land in this part of South London during the middle ages.
Roger de Bavent held land under obligation to Baron Wakelin de Maminot, who was Lord of the manor of Deptford, in 1262. His son Adam de Bavent held a right to ’free warren’ (hunting wild animals for food) in Hatcham in 1285.
The Bavents held part of Hatcham manor until Roger de Bavent gave it to King Edward III in the fourteenth century.
This project aims to be a service to historians, genealogists and those with an interest in urban design. |
