Hill Farm was also known as ’Pig Farm’ or ’Rye Farm’.
In a sales catalogue of 1828 when the estate of Henry Hoare was sold, it had no name at all. Daniel Tye was mentioned as the tenant.
The farm was mainly specialised at the time of the sale in livestock, although there was some arable land mentioned. There was a large timber barn at the farm.
By the time of the 1841 census, William North was listed as the farmer, though in the 1851 census, nobody was listed as living at the farmhouse.
In 1852, William Goodson of "Hill Farm, Carshalton" won a highly-commended award at Smithfield Cattle Show in London for his pen of Essex pigs. He lived at the farm with his wife, a maidservant and William Clarke. After William Goodson’s death, Clarke remained at the farmhouse for some years.
Captain Thomas Goodson and his family were the next resident, listed as living there in 1891 but not as a farmers - Thomas was a JP.
