Augustus Road, SW19

Augustus Road is named after its developer.

In 1846, the 4th Earl Spencer sold the Wimbledon Park house and estate to John Augustus Beaumont a property developer. He laid out new roads and sold plots of land for house building. Development of the area was very slow at first, but continued throughout the second half of the 19th century, gradually nibbling away at the parkland.

The Fazl Mosque (English: The Grace Mosque) also known as The London Mosque, was the first purpose-built mosque in London. It was opened on 23 October 1926 in Southfields. At a cost of £6223, the construction of the mosque and the purchase of the land on which it stands, was financed by the donations of Ahmadi Muslim women in Qadian, Punjab, British India, with support from the British Muslim convert Khalid Sheldrake. Just about my favourite maps of London are the Ordnance Survey maps which were produced at the turn of the 1870s. They are works of beauty and clarity. Southfields District Line station would appear later at the centre of this extract on the site of the building called ’Elm Lodge’.
