The Championships, Wimbledon, commonly known simply as Wimbledon or The Championships, is the oldest tennis tournament in the world. It has been held at the All England Club in Wimbledon since 1877. Roehampton was originally a small village – with only 14 houses during the reign of Henry VII – with the area largely forest and heath. They are works of beauty and clarity. Southfields District Line station would appear later at the centre of this extract on the site of the building called ’Elm Lodge’. The area didn’t have a name so it inherited the name of a large field marked on the map as ’South Field’ and added an ’s’. This is a map dating from the 1850s when the River Thames upstream of Battersea was the equivalent of the River Thames upstream of Marlow now.
