Queen Mary University of London is a prestigious public research institution in East London.
QMUL (or informally QM) is part of the federal University of London and a member of the Russell Group, known for its high-quality research.
The Beaumont Trust, managing funds bequeathed by Barber Beaumont, acquired the former Bancroft’s School site from the Drapers’ Company. On 20 May 1885, the Drapers’ Court of Assistants agreed to contribute £20 000 towards the technical schools of the People’s Palace.
The foundation stone was laid on 28 June 1886. Queen Victoria officially opened the palace’s Queen’s Hall on 14 May 1887, also laying the foundation stone for the technical schools in the east wing.
The technical schools began operating on 5 October 1888, with the palace’s construction fully completed by 1892. Some envisioned these schools eventually evolving into a technical university for the East End. To support the educational aspect, the Drapers’ Company pledged £7000 annually for a decade starting in 1892.
The university has six campuses across London, with its main site in Mile End being the largest self-contained campus of any London-based university. QMUL also maintains an international presence in China, France, Greece and Malta.
It is organised into three faculties - Humanities and Social Sciences, Science and Engineering, and Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry.
The institution is a significant centre for medical teaching and research, forming part of UCLPartners, a prominent academic health science centre. QMUL has also taken over the functions previously provided by Royal Holloway at the University of London Institute in Paris.
QMUL boasts a distinguished alumni network, including nine Nobel Laureates among its former students and staff.
