Great Pearl Street was once a major street of the area.

It was built in the mid-seventeenth century. Great Pearl Street was described by Charles Booth in his 1890s survey as "Common lodging houses with double beds – thieves and prostitutes".

It was replaced by Calvin Street in 1937.
