Soho Place is a walkway created in the 2010s when the Crossrail project caused the demolition of the locality.
Originally the eastern section of Sutton Row, the area was repurposed as the London Astoria theatre was swept away.
The London Astoria, situated at 157 Charing Cross Road, was as a prominent music venue from 1976 until 2009. The structure, which began as a 1920s warehouse, later functioned as both a cinema and ballroom before its transformation into a theatre during the 1970s. Following renovations in the mid-1980s, it emerged as a nightclub and performance space for prominent musicians. Several clubs and music venues occupied the surrounding buildings.
The venue’s demolition in 2009 made way for Crossrail development.
@sohoplace is a West End theatre, located next to where the London Astoria once stood. The venue forms part of the development surrounding Tottenham Court Road station’s Elizabeth line. Opening on 15 October 2022, it was the first new purpose-built theatre in London’s West End for half a century.
This website does not sell maps. Instead it offers a subscription service via Substack. Paid Substack subscribers can get old maps/satellite views in printable A2 PDF format. Though we will not be printing or framing ourselves, you'll be able to take your map to your local print shop/picture framer and let them produce the magic. |
